Kelli carried one of the devices they’d used to test the ripdrive; the same one they’d sent into orbit. Their appointment with the chief-magistrate was within the hour. Other well-dressed individuals wandered the circle, waiting for other appointments or finding respite from the tower. It was a beautiful, tiered place, one that many only were able to dream of seeing. The trio continued on their way from the edge of the ring, passing murals as they went. That’s one way to ensure that everyone who’s not prepared is late, Aki thought as they walked.
“Everything ready to go?” Aki asked.
Kelli lifted the ripdrive and raised an eyebrow. Pavel nodded slowly and pushed his glasses up on his nose.
“I hope these preparations pay off. It would be a shame to lose everything that we have here, but we both know this man is not perfect. Things down there would not be as dismal as they are if he applied himself.” Pavel gestured to the edge of the garden ring.
“There is reason enough to distrust him. These efforts will not be wasted regardless of the outcome,” Aki said.
They walked on in silence for almost a mile, the tower growing to take up their entire view. Small entrances marked the sides where elevators would take petitioners and those favored enough to work in the tower to their destinations and nowhere else. Aki would have wandered the halls if given the chance, but there were more halls there than could be covered in weeks, much less a day.
They arrived at the elevator, and Aki’s implant gave it what it needed to take them to their appointment. The destination display read “Audience Chamber,” making it clear to Aki that this would not be a quiet meeting in an office. True, Caldavo had requested an appointment with them, but that didn’t mean that there wouldn’t be an audience as well.
There was a whine as the dampeners wound down, and then the doors slid open into an expansive space.
“Looks like a great hall like you’d read about in a fantasy novel,” Kelli whispered.
Security officers stood next to an array of pillars that held up the vaulted ceiling. Banners bearing the ExoSystems logo hung from each. Instead of walls or glass, there was what seemed to be an open view out into the city. Aki couldn’t tell if it was a projection. There certainly was no breeze like they’d expect at this altitude. The room was filled with sourceless light, and the floors were immaculately polished.
The trio continued into the massive chamber to the center, where a large circular dias waited. Instead of a throne, there were simply couches like she would expect on a talk show. No, a throne would be too self-aware. And no crowds, but that only means we don’t get to see who’s watching.
As they ascended the dias, Aki’s implant notified her that her identity had been scanned. Still no effort to find out who we are until we get here. How accommodating.
“If it isn’t the group I’ve been looking forward to seeing! Welcome, welcome. Come make yourself comfortable.” Caldavo’s voice boomed across the chamber. He had an exotic accent, one that Aki couldn’t entirely place. “I take it you are considering my offer?”
“That we are. To skip the formalities, our test was successful. But we want to know what you want from us, first. What would your terms be for giving you these designs?” Pavel said.
“I am open to some different options. I will ‘skip the formalities’ as well. Ultimately, I want access to these, both for applications of the small scale testing that you initially showed, and for the long-distance, larger-scale results you have shown. I presume since you had to take all of the researchers aboard on the test flight, a portion of this is still manual?” Aki was surprised that he was asking questions and not outright demanding the technology, and seemed to have at least read into their tests. I suppose if you can make someone thank you for working them to the bone, that’s easier than ruling with an iron fist. Still, we’ll see what happens if he doesn’t get what he wants.
“That’s correct. We don’t have very appropriate applied computational methods to emulate some of the math that I was doing, not even on a reasonably powerful QPU like the one we took with us. That’s why I went along. And even if we could, a large portion of the processing power is needed to run the ripdrive itself. Are you familiar with what rip generators are?” Kelli jumped in. Aki shot her a look, but none of this was new knowledge.
“I’m not, outside of knowing that they are a component of this and put most computing systems under heavy load, and I’d be lying if I said I wanted to know more about them. What I do want to know is what it would take in order to make that not as much the case. What would it take to get it into a state where it can be used by someone not as technically minded?”
“I could go through and solve equations for common jumps, but the parameters are different for each location, change over time, and sometimes they simply won’t work. Additionally there’s the current limits on both rip generators and therefore the size of what you can bring along, as well as the distance that you can go. With sufficient budget and data, I think we could break through those limitations on both sides, but I don’t have an accurate timeframe nor cost estimate at this point. We’d rather be up front about these limitations.”
“I appreciate that. Now, let’s talk about who else has access to these. Does anyone beyond those in this room know about the designs enough to build a working version?”
“No.” Pavel shook his head.
“So then exclusivity is on this table. You are all intelligent individuals, so you would be aware that this type of novel technology is most useful when only one party has it. Right now, that is you. I would like control of who has access to this, at least for a limited amount of time. I am not so naÏve to assume that just because I have it right now, someone else won’t figure it out or somehow get their hands on it. You will retain patents, and be named as the creators if this was to be released to everyone. I would prefer at least a decade of exclusivity including improvements on the technology, but that is negotiable.”
“What would we get in return?” Aki spoke. Caldavo turned to look at her, and there was something in his eyes. A slight confusion, mixed with something distant.
“Limitless requisitions and coffers while on Andeluvia. As many research staff as you want. You will not want for anything, and no politics will interrupt your work. I think that’s fair for the advantage that you’d be giving me.”
“What if we also wanted powers to grant access to other organizations or groups? What about information? Would we be able to access anything?” Aki spoke again. They had each agreed upon roles, and they were going to stick with theirs.
“Would I be able to approve who you are giving this to, or what you are looking for? Or are you asking for limitless power?”
“What would each entail? I’m not asking for limitless power, but freedom.”
“The prior would be easy enough to agree to. The latter, I would need to know why. Have you run into limitations in your past work that would warrant that? As far as granting access to outside parties, I trust you understand why I would hesitate. True freedom means limitless power over others. I admit I am more free than most, but that type of drive for freedom normally comes with motivation. The question is if you will reveal that motivation to me. Most do not.”
“Give us a moment to deliberate,” Aki asked. She had no doubts that he’d still be able to hear all of them regardless of where they were in the room, but face was important here, and talking about someone in front of them did not give face. They descended the dias and walked to one side.
“I need to know what he knows about what happened to me. His response will determine which stipulations I refuse to move on. Still, this is going better than I anticipated. Any other thoughts?”
“This could be good for us. I still want to see what he specifically wants us to do. Never hurts to have things clearly defined.”
Pavel held up a pair of crossed fingers, and then nodded.
When they returned to the dias, the mild confusion that had haunted Caldavo’s face was gone, replaced with recognition, and something more sinister. He made eye contact with Aki.
“Another benefit I can offer is excusal of past crimes. Disobeying a corporate mandate is a high crime for a citizen of ExoSystems, and if we were to find that one of you had done something to that effect, that would be unfortunate. I could offer you protection from that coming back to find you.” The insinuated “like you came back to find me” made Aki shiver. His voice was lower than it was before, colder.
Pavel and Kelli both turned to look at them. Pavel looked concerned; Kelli looked confused. The guards that lined the edges of the space seemed more attentive than they had been a moment ago.
“And if we don’t accept?” Kelli surprised Aki with the edge in her voice.
“You two are free to go. I have no quarrel with you. When ghosts walk into my chamber, though, that’s when it’s time to ask more questions. My patience wears thin; make your decision.”
“We refuse.” Pavel stated. There was no question in his voice.
“Very well. You are free to go. She stays here,” Caldavo said, gesturing at Aki. He knew what he was saying.
The three of them started walking together towards the exit.
“You would defy a mandate in my presence?” Caldavo screamed, outraged. His head snapped to the security officer nearest them. “Stop them! Weapons free!”
An icon flashed across the security officer’s visor. He pulled his rifle around to his front, and took aim at Aki. He fired. Aki tried to dodge, but wasn’t able to move out of the way quickly enough. They anticipated the impact and closed their eyes, but it never came.
Kelli’s hair was floating in a crimson halo around her, as if they were on the ship. Aki caught a flash of purple from her wide eyes. Then Kelli narrowed her eyes. The bullet had stopped nearly a yard away from Aki, and they watched as it reversed direction and fired into the security officer instead. Caldavo made a furious gesture from the dias, and all of the security officers pulled their rifles around.
Aki pulled the anger and fear that were swirling in their chest and pushed it all towards Caldavo. A bright blue lance shot forward towards him and would have impaled him had he been there. He peered down at the distortion that the lance caused in the projection before it flickered out.
Kelli hit the button on the testing device, and they landed in an open area in the spaceport. Aki and Kelli both heard the scream of the device this time. It made Aki nauseous, and their eyes and the back of their head tingled.
Aki sent a command with her implant, then the trio dashed away towards their waiting ship.

2021.11.28 00:03 slyguy183 The Kemba Walker Experiment Needs to End
Tonight has to be the nail in the coffin for Kemba playing for us. We looked so much better out there without Kemba mucking up our defense and we even looked better on offense with Burks facilitating. Our energy was absolutely incredible all night long and we didn't even lose the 3rd quarter. All signs points to Kemba sad as that is.
Kemba has the 18th worst +/- in the league. His only competition for the most part are players on awful teams like Houston, OKC, Detroit, and Orlando. We have more than enough data and evidence to show that he is the main problem for our slow start. He does not provide enough for what detracts us from winning and playing the right way.
Evan Fournier is not the problem and never was the problem. He can knock down shots, handle a little, and tries his best on defense. Asking Evan to work with Kemba on defense is a recipe for disaster. Evan cannot cover up defensive mistakes for someone else. Randle cannot cover up defensive mistakes for someone else.
Kemba just destroys the defensive chemistry of the starters and plays way too many minutes where we have to ask the bench to bring us back. Tonight when all we needed from the bench was to keep us in the game, it was absolutely perfect. Win or lose, this Knicks team we saw tonight is what we want to see every night. Hard nosed defense and boundless energy. The only way for that to happen is for Kemba to see extremely limited time on the floor.

2021.11.28 00:03 NikNakZombieWhack Medications Chart
I am in medic school at the moment and recent finished the pharm/administration section, and I've gotta be honest, it didn't really help me much with the actual medications we use/have to learn. So I've been working on making my own chart to somehow organize and categorize medications so it isn't just a bunch of words that we get tested on. But I'm kind of out of my depth here, and it's taking a gratuitous amount of time away from my actual class work. I'm going to keep working on it in my down time, but would anyone here happen to know of any materials I could reference where maybe a similar thing exists?
In my head, I'm picturing some kind of MoA x Class or indication, but again, making grandiose reference materials is by no means my strong point.
My school isn't the best and they're just throwing 5 meds at us per week that don't line up with where we're at in the schedule at all. For example, we're in airway right now, but literally none of the meds this week are ß-2, nebs, etc. The chapter talks about some of the paralytics for RSI, but we aren't taught or tested these right now, which would make sense to me. Meanwhile, we were told to learn succinylcholine like 4 or 5 weeks ago, with no context, for example.
So far what I've made is a list of reorganized drugs from the pharm key they gave us, and added all the brand/generic names(depending on what was missing), and sorted them into classes, and in the case of antidysrhythmics, added their subclasses. Some of the meds are in several classes, as I'm sure you're all aware, so it isn't good for an end-all master list.
I feel like I've gone on way too long with this so I'll leave it there, and if I need to post somewhere else, that's fine too. Honestly wasn't sure if this was a breech or sub rules.

2021.11.28 00:03 demetriosking Ideas for projects using fabric scraps?
I'm an assistant teacher in a 3-5s room and will be bringing in fabric scraps (mostly flannel) for the kiddos to use for... something. My head teacher is excited about the scraps but doesn't really have any ideas how to use them, either. So, any ideas from you creative people? I had a thought about possibly letting the kiddos make beanbags or something by hand sewing the fabric scraps, but not sure how we would introduce sewing and needle safety to the younger kids.

2021.11.28 00:03 Agentdoubleo97 Thinking about starting a Luggage Storage Business
This post is very different than many of the other posts on this subreddit but I’m hoping some of you may find it interesting.
I’ve been planning this for a while but I would like to start a luggage storage business. I live within minutes of a major U.S. airport (Boston, Ma). My plan is to start here and expand to other cities if my trial run is successful.
My first step would be to run some online ads for when people search “luggage storage in Boston” which would lead to a simple website that I will create. Initially I’d be doing all of the storage through an extra storage unit I have in my apartment but then I plan to reach out to local businesses.
I’m reaching out because I wanna see how many of you on travel have used or have thought about using a luggage storage company.
What did you like/dislike about it?
As a traveler myself, I understand that luggage is a extremely important and I’d want to reassure customers that their luggage will be extremely safe with me/my company (through insurance and any other means I could take).
